Dr. Mathew Gendron
Licensed Psychologist (CHCPBC #04144)
I am a licensed psychologist and lecturer in counselling psychology at The University of British Columbia. I have experience in public, private, post-secondary, and forensic settings. In addition to my generalist education in counselling psychology, I have specialised training in the areas of sexuality, masculinities, and relationships.
I enjoy supporting clients of all genders and sexualities with a range of presenting concerns. As a gay-identified psychologist and educator, I have devoted significant attention to supporting gay, bisexual, and queer men's sexual and mental health, with a particular focus on concerns with sexual interests and behaviours.
I blend critical and person-centred theories with cognitive-behavioural (CBT) and emotional(ly)-focused (EFT) approaches to practice. I believe that under ideal circumstances, we engage with our lives in ways that promote wellness and growth. Conversely, life's challenges (e.g., physical concerns, difficult relationships, stifling social contexts) can promote unhelpful or distorted thoughts, distressing feelings, or uncomfortable patterns of behaviour.
At the outset of therapy, I join with clients in exploring thoughts, feelings, and behaviours related to their concerns. I then leverage available theories and practices as we explore preferred ways of engaging with these challenges.
